Welcome
Redev

Thornhill Primary School is situated to the north of Cardiff city, in an elevated position with views over the city and the Bristol Channel. The school has its own playing fields and within the grounds there is a natural conservation area which is safeguarded by a Protection Order due to there being great crested newts in the pond.

The school’s catchment area is semi rural although the new housing developments that have been ongoing during recent years have to some extent changed the outlook.

The school opened on 3rd September 1991 and 53 pupils aged 4 – 6 were admitted on 4th September of that year. In February 1994 the school was designated a two form entry with a standard admission number in each year of 60. The pupil population continued to grow year on year and additional accommodation was provided partly in temporary demountable classrooms. Since then two extensions have been added to the school adding four new classrooms. The school is hopeful that eventually the last four classes of children, housed in demountable classrooms will be provided for in purpose built classrooms in the main building of the school.
Cardiff Council has recently made an announcement that the status of the school will change from catering for 4 – 11 year olds to 3 -11 year olds in September 2010 when it will add a 48 place nursery to the school.

We have a thriving PTA, dedicated to establishing strong links between Home and School. Although highly successful as a fund raising body, the PTA is equally concerned with activities that develop social links with school.
Events vary from highly organised Christmas and Spring Fayres to the more informal activities. The PTA has contributed significantly to the high profile and positive identity that Thornhill Primary has acquired in a relatively short period of time. The school highly values the Home / School partnership that has developed and the free flow of information that takes place in an atmosphere of understanding and open-ness.

The general welfare and happiness of every child is paramount and by working together at home and in school we share in our commitment to the success of our children.

In order to involve pupils in the decision making process within Thornhill, a School Council was set up in 2003. The council consists of 10 Year 6 children and a member of staff. Their aim is to provide a link between the children and the school staff.
The council meets on a regular basis to discuss school /charity fund raising and other issues of direct concern to the children, such as playtimes. Members of the council have also been involved with school committees, for instance, to provide shade and shelter on the playground.
